âI received a letter.â
Sophie held up a single sheet of paper, already crumpled with much reading. Ralph, sat mournfully on a stool at her feet, glanced at it.
âFrom Perry?â
âYes, from Perry. Who else, silly?â
Sophieâs smile broadened as she spoke her husbandâs name and she clutched the letter to her bulging belly.
âWhat does he say? Is he well? Whatâs it like in the navy?â
Ralph sat forward, looking interested in something for the first time in over a week. Heâd become a shadow of his former boisterous self in the days following Gus Richardsonâs death. The whole community had turned out for a tearful funeral and Ralph had felt everyone was pointing at him â blaming him. He knew he was already known as a bit of a troublemaker and felt certain that this tragedy had put the seal on the watermenâs dislike of him.
He was still working with his father â Stephen would allow nothing else and Ralph longed to please him now â but as soon as he could he escaped the riverside to hide away with his own grief and shame. Heâd taken to coming to Sophieâs, ostensibly to help her with the lifting and carrying now her time was close, but in reality to absorb some of her soft, non-judgemental calm.
âHe says heâs fine,â Sophie told him now, reading over the few, spidery lines once again. âHe was never very good at his letters, but he says theyâre treating him all right and heâs not been in any danger yet.â She swallowed the last word hastily and pushed on. âHe says Nelson is a very great man and heâs seeing some amazing sights but heâd rather see, see â¦â
She struggled to complete the sentence.
âSoph?â Ralph laid a tentative hand on the girlâs knee and she smiled at him, though her eyes were watery. âHeâd rather see his home and his wife any day?â he guessed.
Sophie nodded and snatched a handkerchief out of her pocket to dab away the tears. Ralph patted at her knee, feeling useless.
âHeâll be home soon,â he promised.
âI know. Not soon enough though. He thinks heâll be many weeks yet. Thereâs no way heâll be here for â¦â
She nodded down at her belly.
âBut back for the Christening no doubt,â Ralph said stoutly.
Sophie sighed and turned her head away.
âHe may be, but will I?â
âWhat?â Ralph leapt up and went round to look at her. âWhat did you just say, Sophie? Of course youâll be here.â
âI might not. Itâs a dangerous business you know, birthing.â
âNot so dangerous these days and Midwife Jones is the best in the business.â
âSo everyone keeps saying, but what if sheâs busy? What if someone else needs her when my time comes? What then?â
âThen youâll do it without her. And, besides, first babies take ages to come. Sheâll be there Iâm sure.â
Sophie looked up at him, startled out of her fear.
âHow do you know that, young Ralph?â
He blushed.
âI was asking Mother the other day. I think itâs interesting.â He scuffed at the floor with his toe.
